When you drive-by spot two of your favorite things painted in giant letters on a building, it basically necessitates a stop to check it out. Being a hopeless coffee addict and flower fan, this COFFEE + FLOWERS wall in North Park, San Diego has been calling my name since we first moved here.
Now, after finally getting a chance to try it, I can definitively say it was love at first sip. Here’s a few reasons for every coffee lover to add Communal Coffee to their must-visit list…
1. Its lovely interior.
If you’ve ever dreamed of being able to curl up with a cup of coffee inside Anthropologie, then this coffee shop is your kind of place.
One side of the shop’s dreamy white interior is lined with carefully curated displays filled with charming, whimsical items to shop, while the rest of the space is a balanced mix of minimalist white, black, and gold decor, embellished with pops of vibrant color from the live, ever-changing flower displays.
2. It’s unique menu.
Not many coffee shops (even in Southern California) can boast about having house-made avocado toast on the menu, and Communal Coffee’s is definitely boast-worthy. Also: Jalapeño Cream-Cheese filled croissants, fresh juices made in-house, and lattes whose flavors don’t come from a bottle… Fresh pumpkin puree in your pumpkin spice, anyone?
3. There is a flower shop inside.
Communal Coffee shares the building with a flower shop called Native Poppy. You can browse the individual flowers yourself to create your own bouquet, pick one of the bouquet designs off the “flower menu” to have the florist create for you, or grab one of the ready made bouquets on display.
It is definitely a unique and charming experience to be able to sit at the counter and watch the barista and florist work side by side at the same counter with their individual creations.
4. Your taste buds will thank you.
Creamy honey lavender lattes? Butter croissant breakfast sandwiches with prosciutto? Refreshing orange white mochas? The coffee may be a pricier than what you’re used to at Starbucks, but the lattes are made with syrups and purees made in-house with real ingredients and in flavors you won’t find just anywhere.

5. There’s room for everyone.
It is the biggest bummer to show up at your favorite coffee shop ready to work and find that there is nowhere to sit (again). That’s unlikely to happen here, since it is actually a fairly large space. With individual round tables up front, a counter with stools stretching the length of the room, and an offset room with a lounge area and larger tables, there is plenty of space to hunker down.
In the off chance that there isn’t any space inside, you’ll find plenty more tables in their shaded outdoor area that rubs shoulders with a local plant nursery, along with a basket of various toys to entertain any kids you have in tow.
My adorable coffee dates enjoying the lounge area.
Whether you’re a local or just visiting, I definitely recommend adding Communal Coffee to your list. I mean, where else are you going to be able drink a honey lavender latte while browsing actual lavender?
