This gift was particularly inspired by the wedding couple’s ambitious honeymoon: Paris, Rome, Australia, and the Bahamas (Um, take me with you, please? I’ll carry your luggage and sleep in the hall). However, this idea would work just as well with a couple going to one location on their honeymoon (with a modification I explain in Step 2). I had so much fun shopping for and putting this together that I thought I’d share it for anyone else looking for an outside-the-registry-box idea this wedding season!
DIY Travel Themed Wedding Box
The inside of the finished travel box
Get a travel themed box with a lid. I got this one at Homegoods. This one is sturdy enough to hold all their travel mementos from their trip for years afterward, but a regular gift box in map print (or a similar travel theme print) would work just as well for the gift.
Take four small, square envelopes and put an even amount of money in each of them (whatever amount you are comfortable with). On the outside of the envelope, write what each amount is intended for related to the location(s) they are traveling to. You could go with a drink theme like I did, or if you have a little more cash to invest, you could do a meal or activity theme. For example mine said:
For your first Cafe Au laits in Paris
For your first bottle of chianti in Rome
For your first victoria bitters in Australia
For your first pina colada in the Bahamas
Here is where a modification might come in if your wedding couple is only going to one location. If, for example, they were only going to Rome, my envelopes may say this instead:
For your first Bottle of Chianti in Rome
For your first bowl of fresh-made pasta in Rome
For your first gelato in Rome
For your first visit to the Trevi Fountain (make this one coins instead of cash to throw in)
The envelopes are the really creative portion, so have fun with them and make them unique to the couple and their trip. Once you are finished writing on them, attach them to inside of the lid with scrapbook dots, glue, or double sided tape.
At the bottom of the lid, put a small notecard explaining what is in the bottom portion of the box. Mine said: “And when you are done with all your world traveling, this is for your first dinner at home as Mr. & Mrs!” Then fill the bottom half of the box with cute things to brighten up their dinner table (and cute tissue paper). I chose cloth napkins in their wedding colors, tea light candles, and candle holders from World Market, but you could really do anything from wineglasses, to plates, to a cheeseboard set.
Include a travel-themed card filled with your well-wishes/love and hand it over! I can almost 100% guarantee they will love it…
