Baby, I know you. I know you laugh at sentimentality and you love an accurate statistic, so I know better than to start this off by saying “Greatest Dad Ever!” But here’s the thing: Wherever you are on those open seas, you need to know what this family of yours is thinking about you on Father’s Day 2015 and that is this…
You, “Daddy,” are our sheepdog. You’re our dawn light; our adventurer-maker; our steady hand. You are the reader of ‘Wild Things;’ lead dancer of bedtime dance parties; bather of tired babes. You’re our beach muscles, jacuzzi digger, helping hands. You’re our grill beast, our water man, our Captain at the wheel. In this house: You’re Prayer Warrior, Laugh Leader, Hug Master. You’re our generous giver of gifts, massager of weary feet, wrestler of toddlers in need of shoes and lotion. You’re the giver-away of last bites, you’re our generous pour, you’re our What can I do?, you’re our bodyguard in the night. You’re our lighthouse in times of confusion, our steel frame in storms, our head and shoulders in a crisis. Baby, you’re our ‘just in time.’
The truth is that in this house our daily countdowns all look the same, whether we be 3 months old, two years old, or two and half decades old, and it sounds a little like this: “Three more hours till Daddy comes home…Two more hours till Daddy comes home…One more hour till Daddy comes home…” Be it a good day or bad, this household just craves you 100% of the time, my love.
You know why, don’t you? Oh sweet man of mine, somehow through all of life’s relentless distractions, you manage to show Christ’s love to us every day. Small sacrifices, huge sacrifices: you make them all for us. That father-love you model for us melts us every time. I’m convinced it is what makes our boys want to climb you like a playground 24/7, and I know it’s what makes me breathe more easily when I’m in your arms (Prov.14:26). It makes you the softest heart and the strongest soul all at once.
So, to us, you are the greatest ever. And we are counting down the days until you get home, where there are some somebodies “who love you best of all…”
